  • Musharraf: One Year On

    Posted on June 24, 2011

The last time we saw Perez Musharraf, in conversation with Sir Christopher Meyer on September 29th 2010, he was two days shy of announcing his desire to return to the Pakistani presidency. And what a year it’s been for him.

In light of IQ2’s newly announced autumn season, we thought it would be worth seeing what’s changed since the last time we encountered the former Pakistani President. Here’s how he’s graced our headlines in the last year:

September 2010 – Musharraf announces plans to launch new political party in October to contest the upcoming elections in Pakistan in 2013.

October 2010 – October 1st, at a Westminster press conference, Musharraf launches his political comeback and the Presidency of his own political party: the All Pakistan Muslim League. On Piers Morgan Tonight, Musharraf states he will return to Pakistan in March 2012. He warns of a military coup in the country.

February 2011 – a Pakistani Anti Terrorism Court issues an arrest warrant for Musharraf, charged with conspiracy to commit murder of Benazir Bhutto in 2007. Prosecutors say he was aware of Taliban plans to target her but did not act to prevent her murder in Rawalpindi.

March 2011 – Musharraf makes public comments about the UK’s murky role in torture, which sparks investigation into the claims that Britain was complicit in the torture of terror suspects in other countries, including Pakistan, by an independent body. Meanwhile, the Sindh High Court registers treason charges against Musharraf.

Musharraf will be speaking for the motion ‘The war on terror was the right response to 9/11’ at IQ2’s debate on Tuesday September 6th, 2011. Click here to buy your tickets.
