The Ultimate Pervert Art
Posted on July 1, 2011 with 2 notes
“Cinema is the ultimate pervert art. It doesn’t give you what you desire - it tells you how to desire’ - Slavoj Zizek
Today, in a special lecture for Intelligence2, radical philosopher Slavoj Zizek will put forward his argument that global capitalism is on the verge of self-destruction. But the celebrated left-wing scholar is just as famous for his musings on film theory as he is for his economic and political diatribes – most notably his masterpiece, The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema.
In this documentary he explores films from a psychoanalytic theoretical perspective and an irresistibly unorthodox stand point. He reveals the hidden language of cinema and what films “can tell us about ourselves”. By shooting the Perverts from original locations with replica sets he is, it would seem, commenting on the film from within the film itself.
Today, we bring you our favourite three clips:
1) Zizek describes how a camera angle has the ability to make you feel like “we don’t know who we are, as if we are forced to act as a doll for another divinities will”.
2) Why the The Sound of Music “addresses our secret fascist dreams”.3) And in this excerpt he highlight’s the ambiguity of music because “it externalises our inner passion” and so is “potentially always a threat”.
