The Quirkier Side of Cycling
Posted on September 2, 2011

We all know that a bike is very useful, both for the commute and for leisure, but there are some who have taken it to a whole new level…
Cinema powered by cycling- Magnificent Revolutions have created a cycling generator than can power 600W of audio visual equipment for public film screenings. It uses up to 8 bicycles so you can have a gentle exercise with your friends while watching a movie. It also means you don’t have the worry of where to store your bike while you watch the film - just don’t stop peddling!
Naked Bike rides- Originally created to emphasise the vulnerability of cyclists compared to other road-users, naked bikes rides have become a nation-wide phenomenon, embarrassing and exciting cities from Portsmouth to Edinburgh. In the recent London naked bike rides, hundreds of cyclists donned their birthday suits andsang happy birthday to the queen as they passed by Buckingham Palace.
Tweed Cycling Club- If you yearn for a higher class of cycling then the Tweed Cycling Club with their motto “Style not speed. Elegance not exertion.” may just be for you. A strict dress code of natural fibres, plus fours, a woolly jersey and a cloth cap is enforced as the only attire a gentleman ought to wear.
Pub on wheels- If you’ve ever wished to quench your thirst while on your bike you are clearly not alone. Pedibustours gives you the opportunity to cycle around some of the capital’s most picturesque architecture with your mates while sipping a pint at the bar.
Extreme uni-cycling (honourable mention)- While this is not strictly bicycling, it would be callous not to list the dare-devil stunts of the in this post. How anyone can look at a unicycle and think that it might be fun to ride it down a mountain is beyond many but they have with some quite spectacular results.
We shall be delving into the world of cycling this Thursday (September 8th) at our “Cycling Festival” featuring a myriad of speakers including Will Self, Graeme Obree and Bella Bathurst.
